This is a molecule studied by Professor
Wang Yu. It is not easy explained with use of VBT of high school
level. SO2 is a bent molecule with two extra
electrons on S. One may form the sigma bond with C, and the
other is used for pi bond. Of course, the hybridization on S
will not be typical sp3. I would say one p orbital is
more used for the pi interaction, and the rest s, and p orbitals are
more used for the sigma bonding. |
